What will the next generation of media consumers want? A new report from the Digital Youth Project offers some keen insight. Based on an extensive three-year study, the report details how kids in the United States use digital media in their everyday lives.

Points for journalists to consider:

Community. Teens live their online lives connected within communities.

Rip, Remix, Share. Teens respond to information and culture by sampling and remixing it. They then look to their communities for reaction.

Multimedia. Teens want more than just text when gathering information and culture. They also expect self-taught multimedia expertise among each other, including video, audio, graphics, hyperlinks.

NPR has drank the online kool-aid and is putting its journalists through intense, seven-week training courses in multimedia journalism that encourages them to expand their repertoire of reporting and storytelling skills.

“We are learning how to think differently about our contributions to the programs that we serve. Our role is to think more Web first and not radio first.”

“The print product is dead. It all has to be fed into the internet product now. The internet is going to save the written word,” according to sports columnist Jay Mariotti during an interview on a Chicago sports radio show.

“Yahoo got something like 30 million hits during the Olympics. These places are for real. They’re legit. It’s just something we’re all going to have to come to grips with. Our fathers may read a newspaper over coffee, but I don’t know anyone under 40 who is picking up a newspaper and reading it.”

Mariotti resigned this week from Chicago Sun-Times newspaper, bemoaning that sports journalism is now ‘a Web site business.’
