The New York times recently had an article about voiceofsandiego.org, a journalism publication that is solely online. It made a name for itself by going places where other San Diego media had not, mainly with investigation into local government corruption and mismanagement.
The unique thing about it is that it’s only online, which is where the future of journalism is predicted to be heading, and more importantly, it’s primarily funded as a nonprofit corporation with donations by the community, foundations, and wealthy benefactors.
A model to make online journalism financially successful has not yet been found, and this seems to be a way to get around that so journalism will still survive in an effective manner that can make a difference.
Is this where journalism is going to end up, and would this be a place where you would want to work? The article mentions that a similar publication has appeared in New Haven, so this is certainly something that students could find as a career prospect in the near future.
