Hi! I’m a junior, and I’m both a vocal performance and journalism major. I’ve decided to pursue such different fields because I’ve felt passionately about both music and writing since I was a child. I became interested in journalism staying up late with my mom and watching shows like 20/20, Dateline, and 60 Minutes. Even though I didn’t always understand why the stories were important, I always loved hearing personal stories unfold or digging into corruption during the investigative pieces. As funny and corny as it is, Stone Phillips and Charles Gibson showed me that I wanted to spend my time looking through other people’s eyes or searching for hidden corruption underneath the mundane surface of everyday activities.
I hope that this class can teach me to use all this amazing, but confusing, technology so that I can present news in new, interactive ways. I think it’s so exciting that I don’t have to just read about events anymore, but I can watch videos, post comments and consume the news in completely different ways on the Internet. I’m glad that this class can teach me how to create news with this technology, rather than just consume it.
However, when I am getting my news, I always go to cnn. I love their wide variety of stories and their numerous videos. I also go to facebook at least twice a day, because I’m a bit of a facebook stalker! I have to know what everyone is up to and the newsfeed gives me that information. Finally, I also go to wikipedia frequently just to browse. I enjoy searching a random topic, clicking on the links, and ending up somewhere totally unexpected like the fishercat entry only to find out that fishercats live in Connecticut. By the way, they’re kind of scary. I’m really excited to get started and finally become technologically literate.

The whole idea of looking through another person’s eyes really interests me. With billions of different people all splitting time on one earth, not one person will have the same attitude and outlook as the one sitting next to them. It’s insane. However, if we can understand how and why certain people have certain outlooks on life in general, we can learn to respect each other better and, ultimately, get along. The responsibility to inform, for the benefit of mankind, holds the profession, in my view, above all overs. Journalism is sappy stuff.
